He will be a holy place; for both Israel and Judah he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured.” (Isaiah:8:14&15)
We are used to attributing the verses that refer to Jesus as the corner stone to the people of Israel. While it is true that the life of Jesus was a stone that caused them to stumble, sometimes it is applicable to us as well. When we are suddenly faced with an unexpected crisis, our first reaction to it, tells a lot about how Jesus is to us. Is he a stone upon which our life has been built on or is he a stone that causes us to stumble? When we look back at our lives, there are many times that He has been a stone that made us to stumble. Like when a crisis hits us, instead of trusting Him completely we might have questioned Him, "Lord, why me?" I have lived a life hoping to please you and not like so and so, yet it's me who is suffering. This is a common thought that arises in our mind, if we are not fully rooted in the Word of GOD and committed our lives to GOD. If we still happen to be that person, then Jesus is the stone that causes us to stumble in our life. Because we are questioning His love for us, His ability to get us out of the crisis and that's stumbling not standing/building. If we fully trust His ability, faithfulness and goodness, no matter what happens we will not lose our peace. If we are that person, then Jesus is the rock upon which we have built our life upon.
When the storm hit the boat that the disciples and Jesus were travelling, He was sleeping because He expected someone to take matter into their own hands and at least try to calm the storms. They had heard and seen enough of miracles being around Jesus everyday to try that, yet their faith hadn't been elevated. They questioned Jesus' affection for them when they asked Him, aren't He worried that they are going to drown. Jesus became a stumbling stone here because of the disciples' unbelief. The next time they took the boat and deja vu, a storm appeared. But this time, Peter took the matter into his own hands and stepped out of the boat and ended up walking on water. Now, because of Peter's faith, Jesus didn't become a stumbling stone to him. Let's check our lives, where we are in trusting GOD. It's up to us to determine whether Jesus is the rock upon which we build or the stone that causes us to stumble.
Blessings!
