By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. (Exodus:13:21&22)
Both the pillar of cloud and fire are the one and the same. They served literally as a protection and guide to Moses and the people of Israel. Today, it represents the presence of GOD in our lives. Without His presence, we won't be having any progress in our lives. It's His presence that takes us to the promised land - GOD's kingdom on earth. Let's take a look at the these two aspects of GOD's presence - cloud & fire.
Pillar of Cloud:
While its clear from the above verse that the cloud was to guide them through the day, Isaiah 4:6 adds another detail to GOD's presence appearing as a cloud. It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain. Now, what does the "heat of the day" represents? The answer is in the parable of the sower where Jesus says that the scorching heat from the sun caused the plants to wither and die. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn't have deep roots, they died. (Matthew:13:6) The scorching heat represents the persecution and the trouble that we believers face in this world. At times of trouble, GOD's presence in the form of a cloud will give us shelter and shade, thereby preserving us and preventing our spiritual life from death.
Pillar of fire:
We know who operates at night. I Thessalonians:5:2 says "like a thief in the night". Jesus referred the devil as the thief who comes into our life to steal, kill and destroy. GOD's presence in the form of fire, lights up our night, so that no devil or whatever form of darkness can touch our lives. Whenever, we feel like we are surrounded by darkness, His presence is all we need. It releases a light into our lives that will give us a peace of mind and keep us from the devil's harms way.
To conclude, it's imperative that we find ourselves always under the atmosphere of GOD's presence. We know scientists are worried about a hole in the Ozone layer and it's because of the pollution in the world that we live in. They believe this could lead to catastrophic changes on the earth. It can be compared to our relationship with GOD. If we are lead by the Spirit, meditate His word and keep our mind free of corruption and sin, we will have the presence of GOD as a perfect Ozone layer over us.
Blessings!
