When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests. It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel. (Deuteronomy:17:18-20)
This commandment was given by the Lord to be followed by the future kings of Israel. It applies to each one of our lives as well even today but in a slightly different way. It says that the king has to write for himself a copy of the Law given by GOD. It tells us that no matter who we are and what position of authority we hold, it is imperative to get a personalized copy that is a personalized word from the Lord in every step of our lives. It's not getting a brand new copy of a Bible but to spend time with the Lord and get a personal word from him "for ourselves" daily and act on it. The king himself has to write with his own hand writing, it has to be personal - a personal relationship with GOD. We can't and shouldn't always depend on others to get that Word for us.
The commandment goes on to say that the Word has to be with the king and he should read it all the days of his life. The personal word which we have received from the Lord shouldn't be forgotten. It will come in handy not only when we are faced with a daunting task in our jobs, family or businesses but also while making simple decisions. It goes on to say that when we follow carefully all the Words given to us by GOD, we will stay grounded and will not think highly of ourselves more than we ought to. This will enable us to have a secure position in our lives inspite of whatever wrong that is happening around us today.
