Lesson from Elijah's Ascension

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”

“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

“You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.”
(2 Kings:2:9&10)

What was Elisha expected to see in the event - "Elijah's ascension to heaven" that would bestow him with the double portion of power that was upon Elijah? Well, the answer is "Elisha was expected to see and accept the reality!" The reality that Elijah won't be around him anymore. We can see in verse 16, the company of prophets requesting Elisha to send a search party for Elijah! “Look,” they said, “we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and look for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has picked him up and set him down on some mountain or in some valley.” “No,” Elisha replied, “do not send them.” But we see Elisha is not much interested in doing so because he has accepted the reality that his master, who he and the entire nation of Israel had relied upon so far won't be around anymore.

The lesson that the Lord wants us to learn from this incident is sometimes we have to accept the reality and move on. You might have lost your job, or a loved one or a relationship, whatever it could be. You know what it is because the Spirit of the Lord is pointing it to you right now. Get over it, accept the reality and get on with your life, just like Elisha did.
